CHARACTER |
The
Sacred Birman is a perfect four legged family member. The character lies
inbetween the lazy Persian and the hyperactive Siamese.
A Birman is a cat with a great curiosity, and you will experience a cat that
takes great pleasure in being a true member of your family - helping you make
the bed, do the dishes - or occupy your lap while watching tv..... A computer
screen is great to sleep on top of - you may think of it as a monitor, but in
reality it is a paw heater...
The Birman loves to socialize. He is often more happy living with another cat
than he is living alone. It does not have to be another Birman, but if you think
one Birman is wonderful, well what do you make of two Birmans.... twice as
wonderful? You betcha!
The
Birman is a friendly cat that gets along well with other
breeds of cats as well - or maybe even a dog. However a large part of the Birmans will not treasure living as single cats. If you work a full time job and
have lots of other activities filling your calendar, it may not be in the best
interest of the cat to
buy just one kitten. Hence many breeders recommend that
you seriously consider having two cats. If you are unable to have more than one
cat for whatever reasons, you might want to consider acquiring an older cat for
starters. Time and again some breeders decide to rehome neutered, retired
breeding animals, who may enjoy a more quiet life than a kitten does - or maybe
an older kitten has been returned to the breeder after a number of years because
the new family was unable to keep it for any number of reasons. These cats of
course also need a good and permanent home - and they are certainly worth
considering, if you can only keep one Birman at your home.
The
Birman easily adjusts to his surroundings. He suits perfectly to spending his
entire life as an indoor cat in an apartment.
But if you offer him the
chance to go outside, most Birmans will quickly learn to love this part of life.
When given the possibility, the Birman will prove to be a very skilled hunter -
he will catch both mice and birds like any other cat! But a warning: Meeting
cars in the street is just as deadly to the Birman as it is to any other cat -
and no, they do NOT learn to take care of them selves ( nor do other cats for
that matter)! Besides the risk of being run down by a car - even in a quiet
neigbourhood - you should also be aware of deadly, infectious diseases such as
for instance Feline Leukemia or FIV - Feline Aids! Nor should you forget that
not all people are cat lovers - even if it is a Birman they spot in their back
yard...! If you want your Birman to enjoy the outdoor life, do consider building
him a secure outdoor run - he is ever so much worth it!
